Home Instead Senior Care (Liverpool and Sefton) was rated Good overall at its May 2015 inspection, with an Outstanding rating for caring reflecting exceptional staff compassion, consistency, and person-centred practices. Minor shortfalls were identified in medication record-keeping and the absence of a formal medicines audit, both of which the acting manager began to address during the inspection.

moderateMedication management: “The information recorded varied in detail and did not always record the level of support people needed, including support for PRN (as required) medication.”
minorMedication management: “Handwritten entries were not counter signed by another member of staff. This safety checks would help to assure accuracy of the information recorded.”
minorGovernance: “With regards to auditing medicines practices there was no formal medicine audit however the acting manager informed us checks of medicine records were undertaken.”
minorCare planning: “We found the content of people's care plans varied in detail. We discussed this with the acting manager as to how better record information to make them more person centred.”

Strengths

· Staff were matched to people with the same interests, and small consistent teams were allocated to each person to build trust and relationships.
· Outstanding caring practice recognised, with people and relatives providing overwhelmingly positive feedback about compassionate and dignified care.
· Robust recruitment checks including up to six references and DBS checks prior to staff starting work.
· Comprehensive training programme covering statutory subjects plus specialist training for complex needs including end of life, dementia and stoma care.
· Effective on-call system ensuring senior staff support was available to care staff at all times outside normal working hours.
